Bangdel is celebrated as a pioneer of modern art in Nepal. His career spanned Darjeeling, Calcutta, London, and Paris, before he ultimately returned to Nepal, where he settled and devoted himself to artistic and cultural development. In the 1950s, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where his figurative paintings reveal the influence of European modernism—particularly the Cubist language of Picasso and Braque—while also resonating with Asian contemporaries such as Affandi. Yet Bangdel did not remain within the realm of stylistic imitation. Upon returning to Nepal, he gradually developed a mature and independent artistic language, transcending regional and stylistic boundaries to forge a distinctly Nepali modern vision. Departing from Kathmandu, this exhibition retraces Bangdel’s artistic trajectory across Europe and Asia. Through key works from the 1950s to the 1970s, it examines how he established a pivotal position within the modern art movement in Nepal, while situating his practice within a broader international art historical context.
