Mountains and the sea are the most familiar landscapes in Taiwan, representing the most direct connection between people and the land.
However, when we gaze upon a mountain or look out over the sea, what we see is more than just nature itself. Landscapes carry memories, emotions, physical experiences and projections of life; and as we observe nature, we are constantly re-examining ourselves.
In *Between Mountain and Sea*, four artists—Chen Yu-kai, Lian Ya-qi, Lu Jun-han and Su Yi-han—take the mountain and the sea as their shared visual starting point to explore three distinct ways of observing nature.
The mountain is what we gaze up at;
the sea is the direction towards the unknown.
And we, as human beings, always stand between the mountain and the sea.
