Dirk Salz: Painting Without Brush — Layers of Translucence, Silence, Depth
Bluerider ART Taipei · Dunhua is honored to announce Dirk Salz: Painting Without Brush — Layers of Translucence, Silence, Depth, debut solo exhibition in Taiwan by German artist Dirk Salz, opening on October 17, 2026.
Dirk Salz (Germany, b. 1962) began painting at an early age and graduated in engineering from RWTH Aachen University. Currently lives and works in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany. Working without brush or canvas, Salz paints with a paint roller and harnesses the gravitational flow of poured resin, allowing his work to move beyond the conventions of traditional Minimalism while continually exploring transparency, chromatic tension, and the relationship between light and space. In 2021, he received the Ruhrpreis für Kunst und Wissenschaft (Ruhr Prize for Art and Science), a significant recognition of his artistic career. Works exhibited at the Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern and the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr, in the collection of the Akzo Nobel Art Foundation and numerous private collections.
The title Painting Without Brush refers to Salz's method of working without a brush. He mixes pigment into resin, spreads each layer of color with a paint roller, and lets gravity guide the resin as it flows and settles into a level surface. Each layer must cure before the next can be applied, and the work takes shape slowly through repeated layering and waiting. Glass-thin layers of color overlap, and light passes through, refracts, and reflects between them, so that color no longer rests on the surface but rises gently from within. With no brushstrokes and no trace of the hand, the painting is completed by material, gravity, and time. Through the layering of light with minimal fields and lines of color, Salz blurs the boundary between the real and the illusory, drawing viewers into an immersive sensory experience.
