The sculpture Urban Silhouettes uses sunlight and nighttime lighting to cast human shadows onto the wall of a ventilation shaft. On the opposite side, the upper part of the sidewalk wall features cut-out human silhouettes. At night, these cut-outs are illuminated from within, creating glowing human shapes that appear to be walking among the treetops. The interplay between coming and going, presence and absence, light and shadow evokes the constancy and impermanence of urban life and streetscapes. At night, shadows of trees appear on the sides, symbolizing the trees that were cut down during construction.
The design for this piece was provided by the winner of a public competition, who also served as a consultant, while the construction was carried out by the Department of Rapid Transit Systems.
