《LIGHTING》 draws its concept from the past plant landscapes and historical transformations of Guangci Social Housing. Regardless of the development and evolution of human urban civilization, nature persists in its timeless form, coexisting harmoniously with us. The artist, CHEN-HUNG CHIU, employs an abstract approach to explore how memory, nature, and human-made materials exist and disappear across different spatial and temporal contexts, and how their interrelationships influence and transform one another.
The work is a concrete relief sculpture. Drawing on archival materials such as old photographs, oral histories, and written records related to the surroundings of Guangci, CHEN-HUNG CHIU created a plant-focused concrete relief installation, situated within a space surrounded by trees and vegetation. Using the silhouettes of plants as compositional elements, the artist meticulously carves each outline into the concrete, attempting to capture the traces of light and shadow from a bygone everyday moment.
The work contains multiple layers of reflection — between urban settlements and nature, ordinary concrete structures and art, past and present, historical and future socio-cultural changes. This delicate coexistence, mediated through art, offers a pause for contemplation, serving as a temporal and spatial intersection. It resonates with the current natural environment of the social housing, and anticipates the future metabolism and evolution of urban, social, and natural systems.
Looking ahead, the piece invites reflection on how art might intervene in shaping social character. Its future state — how it evolves within the environment — also mirrors the emerging relationship between nature and socio-cultural contexts. Will it eventually be gradually enveloped by plants, blending seamlessly into its surroundings? Or will it retain its original installation form, revealing a philosophical reflection hidden within the cityscape and garden? Regardless, through the lens of art, it faithfully reflects the contemporary socio-cultural reality.
