"From an Agricultural Society to an Industrial Society" was completed in 1969 and is a mosaic mural created by the late Taiwanese artist Yan Shui-Long (1903–1997). The materials used in this work are primarily kiln-fired tiles and ceramic shards from Yingge, Taiwan, reflecting the artist’s intention to "bring art into the lives of the Taiwanese people." The mural retains the gray cement texture of the retaining wall as the background color instead of fully covering the surface with mosaic tiles, allowing the artwork to harmoniously blend with its surroundings.
The entire piece is composed of eight scenes forming a long scroll. Centered around the theme of cattle, it depicts rural life in Taiwan and narrates the nation’s transition from an agricultural to an industrial society from right to left. By capturing the interplay of light and shadow and thoughtfully arranging the size and direction of color blocks, the mural creates a sense of three-dimensional perspective on a flat surface, vividly portraying the atmosphere of rural Taiwan in the morning, afternoon, and at dusk.
