Launched in 2019, this short film was a collaborative public art project by Tsui and Lee. They produced the film by treating a secret running track atop the Xinglong Public Housing, D2 zone as the point of departure. The track is deformed due to the layout of the building, and ergo cannot be used for real competitive sports. However, it becomes a shelter for the disadvantaged against fierce social competition. The dysfunctional track meets people struggling for survival here. The rules of the game in the public housing give the temporary residents an opportunity to reorganize their life and an alternative way to run their race of life.
This film attempts to question life through the running track atop the building. Is the distance of 150 meters enough to remind you of your original intention? Is it a self-reflective thinking about life? Can it connect the vicissitudes of life? Can we alter it? Can it connect the relationships among the lives in the community, insofar as to create a sense of belonging? This work seeks to project a retrospective mirror image of life experiences from an impossible distance.
