Transformation-Bai Yu |Huang Li Ying Joint Exhibition
Since ancient times, China has had a longstanding tradition of stone appreciation. Huang Li Ying reinterprets the aesthetic of stone appreciation through the lens of contemporary ink art, using the unique reflective qualities of graphite in combination with traditional ink brush techniques to depict the textures of stones from various perspectives. Huang chooses to describe his artistic yearning with the term "sensitivity to time"—a form of authentic perception that does not rely on reason but appeals to intuition, seeking the supernatural through the depiction of the natural.
Bai Yu draws inspiration from the monumental landscape paintings of the Five Dynasties and Northern Song periods. Beyond personal preference, he is drawn to that era because there was no rigid definition of ink painting at the time—it was simply a pure portrayal of the transient world and its myriad forms. Yet paradoxically, this very purity created a legacy that later generations found difficult to surpass. Hoping that the ancient artists’ passionate exploration of the unknown will likewise move and inspire those who encounter his work.
