Seated Among Kindred Spirits — Bu Zi and His Companions
Yi Yun Art will present Seated Among Kindred Spirits — Bu Zi and His Companions during Art Week, focusing on the distinctive creative journey of calligraphy artist Bu Zi (1959–2013). Born Chen Zong-chen in Tainan, Taiwan, Bu Zi devoted his life to calligraphy, embracing it as the central language of his artistic expression. Drawing deeply from traditional calligraphic lineages, he rigorously studied the classical styles of past masters and, through years of unwavering dedication and creative will, developed his own signature form of expression — Sacred Wild Cursive — a monumental, free-flowing script that merges the grandeur of cursive calligraphy with the spirit of contemporary times.
Titled “Seated Among Kindred Spirits,” the exhibition showcases Bu Zi’s imagined dialogues with the historical figures he most admired — including Fu Shan, Xu Wei, and Huang Tingjian. Presented mainly in semi-cursive and cursive scripts, these works reflect a profound spiritual resonance that transcends time, as Bu Zi converses with the literary and artistic minds of the past. The exhibition invites viewers to witness how Bu Zi honored tradition while also reimagining the role of calligraphy in the context of contemporary art.
