Taiwanese wood sculptor Han Hsu-Tung began developing his "pixelated wood sculpture" series 15 years ago. He experimented with different material called "Glulam," and then arranged the wooden blocks, either in regular or irregular patterns, within the interwoven positive and negative spaces. Through this geometric block combination, he creates a sense of digital aesthetics.
In 2019, he stumbled upon books related to electric motors, this piqued his interest, and led him to study programming languages online. Eventually, he succeeded in transforming his sculptures from static to dynamic, allowing him to break through the creative limitations artists often face, embodying the new and evolving nature of art.
The title of this exhibition is "On the Edge," which will hold from October 18 to November 2 at East Gallery. It will feature Mr. Han’s 2023 wood sculpture "On the Edge", which combines GLT and stepper motors. This artwork not only responds to the rise of robotics and AI, but also reflects the anxiety and uncertainty we experience when we find ourselves marginalized or trapped in a difficult situation. It encourages viewers to reflect on the relationship between humanity and technology, as well as the social issues that emerge from it.
