The Symbiosis of Ink and Space, the Interplay of the Tangible and Intangible

The title "Ink-side Out" holds profound significance, symbolizing the dialogue and coexistence between the tangible and the void as represented by ink and blank space. The comma in the title suggests an unfinished state, alluding to the continuity of space and the boundless possibilities that lie within it. In this exhibition, ink is not merely a tool for creation but a symbol that transcends the material realm, guiding a philosophical dialogue between existence (you) and non-existence (wu). The artist, Chu Chen-Nan, re-establishes the dialogue between calligraphy and space through his creations. He achieves a state of freedom and harmony by constructing spatial relationships with ink in his calligraphy works. The content of his pieces also reflects the cyclical and symbiotic relationships between heaven, earth, and humanity. Chu’s art manifests the core principle of Laozi’s Tao Te Ching: "Tao follows its own Nature," interpreting the origins of the universe and its creation, harmonizing with nature, and embracing the concept of non-action (wu wei).

In traditional Chinese calligraphy, the use of empty space is not a mere void but a realm of infinite potential—the essence of the art form. This exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the concept of "nothingness" from two distinct perspectives. The first perspective focuses on the empty spaces within the works, examining how these voids extend the flow of ink and create new spatial imagery. This approach embodies the concept of wu wei (non-action), where the invisible becomes a powerful force, shaping the artwork in subtle yet profound ways. The second perspective introduces a novel approach where the artist uses ink to shape space intentionally. Through this form, viewers are guided to appreciate the intentional spatial construction within the artwork, emphasizing the dynamic relationship between ink and empty space in traditional calligraphy. Optical illusions are employed to create the impression of extended space, expressing the concept of you wei (purposeful action), where the tangible realm flourishes in an active and meaningful way.
