The artwork <Serenade: Harmony>, exhibited in this solo show, is part of the artist’s <New Symphony series>, which consists of relatively small-scale paintings. This series employs palette knife techniques to create dynamic compositions, emphasizing formal elements such as dots, lines, and color. Each canvas is richly layered with a diverse range of oil paint hues.
The <New Symphony>series visually expresses the universe’s vibrant yet harmonious energy waves, evoking the grandeur and solemnity of Western classical symphonies. In contrast, the <Serenade> works cultivate a more intimate and delicate atmosphere. The subtitle “Harmony” and the recurring motifs of two to three circles in the paintings convey the urgent interconnectedness of all things and the necessity of coexistence in harmony.
The artist’s creative practice involves repeatedly layering countless dots and lines with a palette knife, revealing rhythm and order across the canvas. This process is akin to the meditative practice of Tibetan Buddhists turning prayer beads. Each repeated stroke is an act of release—letting go of attachment to transient images and moving toward a state of “no-mind,” where the artist dissolves into the energy of the cosmos. This space, seemingly empty, is in fact deeply full. It is much like a classical composer who meticulously blends complex instrumental parts into a unified and harmonious symphony.
The artist believes, as illustrated by the Indra’s Net in Buddhist scriptures, that all things in the universe are interconnected through an infinitely extending web of energy—each reflecting and depending upon the others. Therefore, both the act of creation and the resulting paintings are the artist’s prayer for harmony and peace between humanity and the cosmos, as well as the message the artist seeks to convey.
