ESLITE GALLERY presents Five Nights amid Rivers and Mountains, showcasing nearly two decades of artistic exploration by Germany-based contemporary artist JI Dachun. Since the 1990s, JI has been recognized for his compositions characterized by expansive blank spaces and diminutive figures, works that combine humor with poetic resonance while persistently probing the essence of painting itself.
In recent years, JI has turned to landscapes rendered in black. He regards Huang Gongwang’s Fuchun Mountain and Paul Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire as two “sacred mountains” of Eastern and Western art history, sensitively transforming them into a distinctive painterly language. Featuring 31 works that range from reinterpretations of classical imagery to abstract landscapes, the exhibition highlights how Ji navigates the tensions of cultural exchange to forge a unique vocabulary of contemporary painting.
