Craftwork Curio Cabinets comprises approximately 250 cast-and-painted objects. The process involved numerous visits to craft artisans and a series of object-gathering activities. Real objects were either pressed or moulded into artificial stone, before being hand-painted as replicas and arranged within a semi-relief curio cabinet. These imprinted and reproduced objects symbolise the flourishing era of Bangka’s (Wanhua’s) diverse traditional trades, while preserving and displaying the stories and memories of local artisans.
The collection includes iconic, long-standing businesses from the Bangka district, such as Sanxiu Blacksmith Shop, Laomingyu Incense Store, Taihe Bakery, and Kajitsu Patisserie, as well as the 180-year-old Fu Da Tong Tea Shop; the Healing Herbar tea bar transformed from an old warehouse; Dayon Herbal Shop; Wanan Herbal Shop; Sizhi Herbal Shop; and others. These enterprises and their crafts are presented within various compartments of the curio cabinet.
Another component of the project was realised through community workshops, in which local residents were invited to participate by imprinting, casting, and reproducing objects associated with their professions. These became part of the artwork, representing the prosperity of Bangka’s trades while preserving the narratives and memories of its craftspeople, and simultaneously documenting the relocation history of Taiwan’s social housing communities. Ultimately, the work establishes a semi-permanent relationship with the Juguang Social Housing complex, serving as a shared repository of Wanhua’s collective memory.
