In commemoration of the 130th anniversary of Taiwan's master artist Chen Cheng-po's birth in 2025, Liang Gallery is honoured to present this special exhibition in response to the Chen Cheng-po Cultural Foundation's major retrospective "Rediscovering Taiwan: Chen Cheng-po's 130th Birthday Anniversary" at the National Taiwan Museum.
This intimate exhibition features over twenty exceptional oil paintings that trace the artist's artistic journey across Taiwan and China, revealing the rich diversity of landscapes and cultural encounters that shaped his vision. Through depictions of significant landmarks from various regions, we explore Chen Cheng-po's emotional connection to the land and his humanitarian concerns.
Beyond his beloved local subjects — the familiar scenes of Chiayi, Guanyin Mountain, and the sunset over Tamsui — Chen Cheng-po's works provide invaluable testimony to Taiwan's social and economic transformation during the early 1930s, capturing the evolving dynamics of agriculture, fishing, industry, and commerce. These paintings carry profound significance both as historical documents and as artistic achievements.
Chen Cheng-po possessed an innate desire for human connection, consistently incorporating figures into his landscape paintings. Even within the most expansive vistas, he would thoughtfully place small human forms, infusing each scene with warmth and intimacy.
At this meaningful moment in art history, Liang Gallery continues this tradition of warmth and inclusivity. Following Chen Cheng-po's example of embracing and integrating diverse cultures — Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, and beyond — we seek to synthesize these rich traditions, breathing new life into the ever-flowing river of art and civilization.
