Tracing the development history of ink and nihonga painting in Taiwan, we can look back to the 1927 Taiwan Exhibition (Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition) during the Japanese colonial period, where works were divided into two major categories: "Western Painting" and "Eastern Painting." The term "Eastern Painting" broadly referred to traditional painting forms from Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. During this time, Asian gouache was officially introduced to Taiwan through the exhibition. Liu Kuo-Sung, who was a student of the Taiwan Exhibition artist Liao Chi-Chun and an important member of the May Art Society, significantly influenced the classical and conservative styles in the Taiwanese art scene. He played a pivotal role in bridging tradition and modernity, revolutionizing traditional media with contemporary artistic expressions.

Chang Yun-Chia’s Asian gouache works are whimsical and nostalgic in subject matter, while showcasing her masterful application of the traditional Asian gouache layering technique known as “Moriage Technique”, creating intricate and sweet details reminiscent of frosted cookies. Japanese artist Sato Ten uses a fine-point pen with craftsman-like precision to delicately outline a vast, fantastical world of imagined cities, drawing viewers in.
