In contemporary art, artists not only express their vibrant creativity and continuously elevate their aesthetic practice, but they also use their unique perspectives and artistic endeavors to observe, respond to, and critique prevailing societal values. This is at the heart of their work. Through artistic production, creators can reflect on and challenge established values, loosening rigid structures in reality and offering diverse questions and possibilities beyond binary viewpoints. Beyond Binary stems from this artistic philosophy, aiming to provide viewers with a comprehensive and balanced perspective that transcends simple dichotomies.
Furthermore, Beyond Binary seeks to gaze, debate, expose, satirize, and represent the current state of contemporary Taiwanese society. By juxtaposing diverse artworks within the exhibition space, they become interconnected texts, forming a snapshot and slice of our times within the exhibition's context. This exhibition brings together twelve artists: Chang San-Hsueh, Chen Ching-Yuan, Chia Chien-Ju, Fu Ning, Hsiao Chu-Fang, Hsieh Yu-Cheng, Hsi Shih-Pin, Ku Fu-Sheng, Su Hui-Yu, Wang Liang-Yin, Wang Yi-ran, and Yang Jie-Huai & Lu Po-Shun. Their mediums span oil painting, printmaking, installations, video art, and more. Amidst the clamor of artistic diversity, this aims to coalesce into a bright and moving rainbow of life — an unconventional perspective from Double Square Gallery that responds to the era.
As Double Square Gallery celebrates its tenth anniversary, it marks a new beginning and departure. We hope to reflect on our past operations, pause, self-critique, and envision future growth. Built upon a foundation of curatorial thinking and execution, and amidst the undercurrents of the market and the challenges of self-reliance, we aim to continue forging ahead, constantly creating new possibilities, and becoming a renewed Double Square Gallery.
