PING Art Space is proud to present Lei Xiaohan's first solo exhibition in Taipei this September. Since her debut at the Taipei Art Fair in 2022, Lei Xiaohan has captured attention with a series of works centered on childhood. These pieces, featuring children accompanied by mythical creatures and young deities embracing animals, have left a lasting impression on viewers and collectors alike. Lei's creations are crafted from camphor wood, a material imbued with the natural scent of the forest, with every mark and groove carved into it serving as a delicate reminder of her childhood memories. The warmth and emotional depth found in the scenes of embrace represent the distilled essence of her recollections. Each individual sculpture seems to thread together moments of innocence and exploration from her childhood, and the handcrafted marks draw viewers into Lei Xiaohan's inner world, as if stepping into her personal forest of memories. Born in Liuzhou, Guangxi, in 1996, Lei Xiaohan developed a love for comics from a young age, a passion that nurtured her sensitivity and thoughtfulness as an adult. To Lei, wood is not just a medium but a companion that grew alongside her, like a close friend or sibling. She channels her emotions into her wood sculptures, expressing through each stroke of paint and every carved line, creating an artistic force that transcends distance and social barriers. The loneliness and fragility of the past are transformed in her works into expressions of trust and strength. In today's world, we often retreat into our own inner "metaverse," whether to escape reality or to reflect and understand ourselves more deeply. In Lei Xiaohan's works, children are depicted as ready to embark on an adventure with an alien spacecraft, signaling the start of a journey into the unknown. Through these pieces, she conveys the importance of courageously and freely exploring one's inner world, urging us to always maintain a sense of curiosity and childlike wonder. This exhibition offers a visual feast that deeply explores the dialogue between the individual and the inner self, while providing an opportunity to reconsider the subtle relationship between childhood memories and contemporary emotions.
