This is the brightest of worlds, and also the darkest of times. In this world where light and darkness intertwine, we live amidst extreme contradictions. Some places are cold as ice, while others are warm as spring; some enjoy the peace and tranquility of harmony, while others are mired in the turmoil of war. Darkness and light coexist, and this opposition and coexistence are the very essence of our world. The artist has witnessed the transformation of her homeland, from a British colony to its return to China in 1997. Growing up amidst this clash of cultures, she often feels like she belongs to neither, existing somewhere in between.

In this exhibition, the artist explores her complex and contradictory feelings toward her homeland through the interplay of light and dark colors. The works repeatedly feature a protagonist floating in the middle of the light, neither black nor white, neither bright nor dark—embodying both contradiction and fusion, a place where opposites coexist. The protagonist sometimes closes his eyes in deep thought, sometimes gazes at distant starlight in search of direction. His tears reflect not only memories of the past and uncertainty about the future but may also carry hints of happiness and emotional connection.

The artist invites each viewer to enter this inner world of light and dark, to feel the struggle and peace in finding self-identity amidst contradictions. Each painting is a journey of the soul, exploring how to find one’s own starlight between light and dark.

Perhaps we live in a twilight world, and we’re between light and dark.
