About
What is 1839 Contemporary? It refers to “from the invention of photography in 1839 to the present.” To help more people deeply understand, love, and appreciate photography, the gallery’s operating philosophy is to be based in Taiwan, look globally, and promote photographic art.
1839 Contemporary Gallery was officially established in April 2009, boasting a spacious exhibition space of 150 square meters. Located in the eastern district of Taipei, the gallery is conveniently situated near notable landmarks such as the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, fashionable department stores, and the Taipei Arena. As a dedicated space for photographic art, we have introduced renowned international photographers to exhibit in Taiwan. Over the past 15 years, we have hosted over a hundred solo exhibitions by international photography masters from the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Poland, Japan, South Korea, China, and Taiwan. Notable photographers include Michael Kenna, Christopher Burkett, Jock Sturges, Michael Wolf, Ken Kitano, and Daido Moriyama.
We not only participate in art fairs domestically and internationally but are also passionate about promoting artists through various art exhibitions and fostering the art market. Our goal is to promote Taiwanese photographic art through exchanges with world-renowned galleries and photographers, and to open the doors of photographic art to foreign artists.
